They are designed to shorten and simplify the trial process, not to serve as a substitute for evidence gathering. (ii) Civil Procedure Code, 1908, O.11 Rr.1, 12 -- Interrogatories -- Answer Amounting to Self-Incriminating Evidence -- A party cannot be required to lead evidence against himself or contrary to his own interest. Where admission or denial of interrogatories would amount to giving evidence against the respondent, he cannot be compelled to answer them. Interrogatories that are not relevant to the suit are also liable to be refused.
